Hares are rabbit-like animals that belong to the order Leporidae/Lepus. Despite looking like they want to eat your soul they are in fact herbivores. They are haunting and lanky and that is why I love them. See the wikipedia page for basic info.

Snowshoe hares (lepus americanus) , despite being cute and more rotund, are true hares- and one of the only hare native to the area I live. If you look closely, you can see
they have the hare's charactistic harrowing stare. 
Jackrabbits are also hares! Both
black-tail (Lepus californicus) and
white-tail (Lepus townsendii) jackrabbits are also native (kinda) to my area.
my love of the hare began in childhood, when I read the The Velveteen Rabbit ; which, for some reason, had a picture of a hare on the cover, so I always imagined the rabbit as a hare. And then, when I started reading and watching Alice in Wonderland properties, I fell in love with the white rabbit (which I also imagined as a hare) and the march hare.
